Take Care of Your Clothes and They Will Last Longer
Although some followers of high fashion buy inexpensive clothes that will not last, it is worth investing in some classic pieces for your wardrobe that will survive many different trends. If you doinvested time and money in some good quality classic clothes you hope will last for some time, it is worth looking after them carefully.
Before you buy, read the care labels. If you have neither the inclination nor the time to hand wash items, then do not buy them. A busy mum will have her work cut out keeping the rest of the family clean, so she needs to have the majority of her wardrobe containing items that can be put in the washing machine with everything else.
There are many fabrics that need to be hand washed. Most washing machines have a “hand wash” cycle which is possibly better than actually washing by hand. The machine will regulate the water temperature and ensure that your clothes are rinsed properly. It is probably better to use non biological powder for delicate items. Wash items inside out, particularly if they have texture or beading. Place delicates inside a net bag or old pillow case for extra protection.
If anything gets stained, try and deal with it as quickly as possible after the accident. There are many stain removal products on the market but often soda crystals dissolved in warm water work just as well as anything else. Soda crystals are harmless to the environment and very inexpensive. Blood can be soaked off in milk, and tar removed with a little petrol on cotton wool.
Dry cleaning is ineffectual and expensive. If possible, dab any stains first and then hang outside to air. If you wear a suit everyday, ensure that you have at least three so you can alternate wearing and airing. A good old fashioned clothes brush is great for removing dust and dirt.
Moths can be a nuisance, particularly with wool, cashmere and cotton knits. Fill your drawers and wardrobe with lavender and cedar wood for a natural deterrent.
Moulded bras should be folded carefully and kept flat so the moulds are kept in shape. Hang trousers neatly to keep creases in the right places. Special dresses that are worn in frequently should be kept in protective bags.
Shoes and boots should be polished regularly. The polish will keep the leather supple and your shoes will last longer. Suede or canvas can be cleaned with suede shampoo. Keep supports in your shoes so they keep their shape and keep them in the original box. You can either stick a photograph of your shoes on the outside of the box or label them, to save time looking for a particular pair.
Every few months, take everything out of your wardrobe, vacuum inside to remove dust and moth eggs and check each item as you return it to wardrobe.
Once you get into the habit of following some of the suggestions above, it will become easier and you will find your clothes last for longer and will not look worn or tired.
