I have a navy suit, and have nice med. color brown shoes. Can I wear them together? On-line answers are iffy.?

I have this great navy suit and an amazing pair of Johnston&Murphy medium brown shoes (could be seen as a dark tan) and want to know if I can wear them together. I think it looks great, but I’ve had some people tell me I should go with black. I’ve researched online and the answers are iffy, with some saying a shade of brown is okay and others saying black only. I would live some sound advice on this. The last thing I need is to go to a career fair or interview and look like an idiot.
