A Language Emerging As A World Communication Medium

A language can be said to be an entry point to the world of communication. It is a systematic means of communicating with someone by the use of sounds or conventional symbols. While communicating with someone, we use language, gestures, symbols and signs. All these contribute toward making the whole process of communication a successful one. Any means of communicating ideas, specifically, human speech, the expression of ideas by the voice and sounds uttered by the organs of the throat and mouth is a language. A language is that particular component which distinguishes human beings from animals. Though animals also communicate with each other by means of sounds, but they don’t follow any particular sentence structure.

A host of linguists, who base their assumptions on psychology, state that language is nothing but habit formation. In their views, language can be learnt through use and through practice. Thus, the more a person is exposed to the use of language, the better the person learns it. The actual meaning of words and combinations of words is defined by the language’s semantics. English is the most widespread and frequently used language in the world. It is not that the largest number of world population speak in English, even then the popularity of this language can’t be denied.

It is difficult to estimate exactly how many English speakers there are, but according to one estimate there are more than 350,000,000 native English speakers and more than 400,000,000 speakers of English as a second language or foreign language. But these data fail to indicate how important English is as a world language. The importance of this language of royal successor’s lies not in how many people speak in that language, but in what it is used. The news and information world uses English as a major language of communicating with world populace. It is the language of business and government even in some countries where it is a minority language.

It is the language of maritime communication and international air traffic control, and it is used even for internal air traffic control in countries where it is not a native language. The popular culture plays a vital role in spreading English as a world language. The British and American popular language is heard all over the world and people are just going mad about this kind of music. In India also, there are many native authors like Chetan Bhagat, writes their fictions or novels in English. There is endless number of reasons why English should be taught from a very early age.

With the popularization of the term ‘globalization’, English as a language is gaining more and more importance. As the whole world has become a global village, English is coming up as a global language. In Indian scenario also, the number of English medium schools are increasing day by day. It is in fact the need of the hour to equip our children with this language. It is used for everything from international academic conferences to news reports to popular music lyrics.
