Classification Folders Take the Mystery Out of Buying Classification File Folders

There is no other File Folder product more difficult to shop for than classification folders. In all of office supplies, the Classification Folder reigns supreme as the most complicated, feature intensive Office Products of all. However, finding the right classification folder for your needs really isn’t that hard with some helpful tips from an expert. Let’s take the mystery out of finding the classification folder that’s right for you.

My first suggestion is to determine what brand you prefer best. Smead classification folders are probably the best known, and that brand has the broadest selection. They are also staples for most doctor’s and law offices who use tons of classification folders. However, other brands like Esselte Pendaflex and ACCO have quality products that sometimes are a little less expensive. For those of you on a tight budget, I recommend Universal brand for your file folder needs. They are good quality folders and many times are 30-40% less cost than the other brands. After you select your brand, chose the right size for your needs – it’s a simple choice – either letter size for 8-1/2 x 11 documents, or legal size for 8-1/2 x 14. Next, determine what kind of tab filing system you are using. Most people use top tab folders, which are file folders and classification folders with the tab on the horizontal, or long side of the folder. However, many doctor’s offices and businesses using alphanumeric label filing systems typically prefer end tab file folders which have the tab on the short side of the folder, or vertical side.

Next, you’ll need to determine what type of expansion you want your folder to have. The nice thing with classification folders is they have gusseted expansions made from Tyvek or other durable materials that allow your folder to expand and hold more papers than a normal file folder. Expansion sizes can range from 1″, 1-1/2″, 2″ and even 3″ for huge filing needs. Then, (see I told you there were a lot of variables), you need to determine if you need metal fasteners included in the folder. These fasteners allow you to insert pages that are two hole, or three hole punched, and you can fasten papers securely in the folder so they will never fall out. Obviously, classification folders with fasteners are more expensive.

Now we need to determine how many sections you want inside the folder. The most popular classification folders are six section folders, but four section, two section and even those with no sections with simply one primary filing area are all popular. Finally, you need to determine the color of your folder, and many of today’s online office products companies all have tons of colors, from standard grey/green, to cobalt blue, ruby red and bright yellow.
