Will Bonded Leather Last As Long as Top Grain Leather for a Couch/Sofa?

I am shopping around for a new couch at the moment. I was curious as to how durable a bonded leather couch will be vs. a top grain leather couch.

Bonded leather is less expensive cause they take “leather sawdust” & bond it with polyurethane. Which means it’s always going to feel cold & it will off-gas forever. However they are very durable. But when you rip one, it’s not very easy to fix. You do not condition them & they are very easy to clean with a damp rag. You will not have that luxurious smell of leather either.

Top grain COWHIDE is extremely durable & adjusts to your body temperature within 20 seconds. Some have a protective finish on them & some have a light finish & some aren’t finished at all,(called “naked” leather) which makes them porous, but these leathers are very soft & supple Depending on what you want from your sofa determines which finishing process is for you. Some people like me like a light finish so that it develops character & ages well into a patina. For me, this is real leather. They should be pigmented & aniline dyed. There are good leather cleaners & conditioners on the market by Guardsman & LeatherMaster that I recommend. Leather is also easy to repair. The sides & backs can be splits, but never get a leather sofa with a vinyl match sides & back as the stitching will not hold.

The leather process is very interesting & you need a knowledgable person to guide you through at the stores you go to. I recommend Ethan Allen, Bassett, or La-Z-Boy…I KNOW their product is good. They have bonded leather too, but everyone does now just to serve a price-point shopper.

How you treat your sofa will determine it’s longevity. You should never place leather near a heat source or direct sunlight. Make sure your sofa cushions are loose so you can rotate them (everyone has a sweet spot) This is VERY important. A lot of times I see the cushions sewn in & this is a way for the manufacturer to save money on materials, & these sofas are cheaper. And animal claws are not good for leather either.
